Mesker Park Zoo - Evansville

.

[Day 6 Lion's Head Location Clue/Hint: We know the lion's head is at Mesker Park Zoo... all we need to do is discover where. It is on the outside (exterior wall). Its location on the building is in some way related to my name John West, but different! If you go out one of the exits of this building you will see a huge round grinding stone lying flat to be used like a bench... you will be very close to where the lion is mounted on the wall. Check the previous daily clues. See TSGS Cruiser Blog ~http://tsgsblog.blogspot.com/2011/05/guess-where-this-lions-head-is-located.html]

You can support the zoo by adopting an animal at the zoo. My Ohio Valley Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution has adopted a Bald Eagle each of the last 5 years. The DAR has started adopting an eagle, as well.

Adoption Search: DNA Finds Birth Parents...

At our last TSGS meeting (12 Jan 2010), Becky West led a discussion group concerning adoptions. Becky was put up for adoption at the time of birth and officially adopted when she was about 1.5 years old. With my research help, she found her birth family right here in Evansville.

I just found this article about using DNA for Adoptees to use for birth parent searches! I am passing it on to our bloggers. http://www.dna-testing-adviser.com/AdoptionSearch.html by Dick Hill.

There is a lot of other information available with the links on the left column of the above article involving a variety of DNA testing on this web site of DNA Testing Advisor.

Brief TSGS Officer Profiles - Becky West

Becky West was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the Tri-State Genealogical Society. She was recently photographed at the Louisville Zoo and seems to have wings like an angel! Believe me, as her husband for 40 years, this was a staged photo! But like the volunteers of TSGS that are willing to serve as officers and committee members, they are all truly angels!

Becky graduated from Bosse High School, attended Lockyear Business College, got married and started raising a family that consisted of 3 sons and a husband. When the youngest was 10 years old, Becky entered the world of employment outside the home. Most of that time has been at the Little Sisters of the Poor nursing home in Evansville as a nurses aide.
For almost 40 years, Becky has served as her husband's personal secretary for his many non-profit organizations & political community service involvement. This was the Young Democrats (YD's), 4-H, Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), TSGS (over 30 years). She assisted her husband in each of these organizations as advisor, sounding board, secretary, remedial task master, and supporter. She has become one of the most experienced organizational "non- board member" to get elected to a Board of Directors! :)
Becky was a runner-up in the first Miss Evansville Pagent in 1967, was elected President of the Eighth Congressional Young Democrats (YD's), was a volunteer Adult 4-H Leader for over 20 years and is currently very active with the Ladies Auxillary of the Sons of the American Revolution. With the members of the Ohio Valley Chapter of SAR, Becky and a few other wives march (in Colonial dresses) with the SAR Color Guard in parades & other events. Becky was adopted as a baby and finally found her birth family at the age of 42... she has developed an interesting presentation for interested groups concerning her "Journey to the Beginning - An Adoption Story" to discovery her birth family. Becky wrote a poem to her deceased birth mother that most have stated was a real "emotional"message. She not only assists with my SAR "Flags Over America" programs, but she serves as the "pack-horse" helping me pack, load, carry, set-up and take down over 160 flags used in the presentation. Come to think of it maybe she is an angel... she has to be after putting up with me for 40 years!
Thanks for serving, Becky... and Welcome Aboard TSGS!

DOCK at the LIBRARY -
TSGS Meetings/Events

Tonight is the first meeting of our new year 2009 for the Tri-State Genealogical Society... that is a lot of letters to type, so we usually just use "TSGS." Our meetings are held at Willard Library on the second floor in the main room of the Special collections Department (Genealogy & History). We will have a HELP Session at 6:30 PM featuring Becky West's "A Journey to the Beginning: My Adoption Story." Our regular Monthly Membership Meeting will start at 7:30 PM with our program conducted by Connie Conrad. She presents an informative & entertaining power point presentation "So You Think It Doesn't Exist." You do not need to be a member nor is there any charge to attend the HELP Session or the Membership Meeting. Come out to enjoy two great programs and meet some of our members (who just might be able to help you find a lost ancestor!
