What is Digital Archiving?
Is "Digital Archiving" becoming the big buzz phrase for genealogical societies, libraries and other organizations? It is with TSGS and many other organizations everywhere! Our genealogical society has been talking about this subject for several years now, but have not done much more than say we need to talk about it.
Our society is very fortunate to have an experienced, knowledgeable person in the computer/electronic/media field who works with data storage. University of Southern Indiana Retired Professor Larry Goss has been trying to get us more into the electronic age. Larry has been digitally archiving past issues of our members quarterly journal, The Tri-State Packet, for several years now. He is wanting the society to consider other alternatives to archiving these quarterlies.
It is amazing how many other groups are going to digital newsletters and quarterlies. But, actually, it should not be all that amazing since going digital will reduce storage space and costs. With all of the personal media electronic devices like smart phones, Kindles, Ipads, etc. Digital data is the way everything will be available and at our fingertips in seconds. A 20-yr-old is working with me. He has this cool app on his Droid that when placed near the speaker of the truck radio, it will tell him all about a song that is playing: name, artist, album, recording date and more! He can type in a tree or insect name and in a second have a photo of it and just everything you could ever want to know about an Elm tree or a June Bug!
This very morning, Dick Eastman has on his blog Eastman's Online Genealogical Newsletter (EOGN) a good article on going paperless with digital archiving. He has a link to another very good article that both are very good for us less knowledgeable and possibly a little to a lot electronically challenged. I suggest everyone should read both of these short articles to reduce storage of paper and make retrieval so much easier & faster. Here are the links to the two articles:

From My Email Box - "Tri-State Packet Artist"

Tri-State Genealogical Society (TSGS)
Since the first quarterly issue was published in 1977, the yellow cover has featured a sketched drawing by Barbara Simpson. She recently discovered that her drawing is still being used. Last week, I got this email from her.
Hi,
I am Barbara (maiden name) Barrows. Married name in the 1970’s, Simpson. I now live in Denver, Colorado, soon to retire and return to Evansville. I was looking at the Willard Library website and came across the Tri-State Packet for the Tri-State Genealogy Society !!!! I was excited to see the yellow cover of the Packet. I am the artist who drew the riverboat packet for the cover. When I first submitted the drawing it was just a draft and expected to draw it again following approval from the leadership at that time. But, to my surprise, they used the “draft” version of my drawing.
My mother, Mary Barrows, has continued family history and research in Evansville, and when I return to EVV, I plan to re-establish myself with the Society and historical events.
Thanks for the wonderful surprise of seeing my drawing !!!!!

Send anything you think might be of general use by some of our members. Recently the amount of material being sent in has been a little less than in the past... so now is a good time to submit something with a better chance that it will get into this or the next issue. Send what you have addressed to Tri-State Packet Editor: "Brenda Legate" blegate@att.net. Little short tid-bits are needed for page fillers, as well.

This will be our last meeting until September after all of the summer vacations are over. The society membership has voted to start our meetings at 7:oo PM starting with the September meeting.

We are still holding the cost of membership down as best as we can, while most genealogical societies are charging $20 or more.
By the way, we have a new Webmaster... Terry Winchester. He has been working hard updating some pages and improving navigation from page to page by providing a navigational bar on every page! Look for other improvements and additions. Be sure to let him know how he is doing and offer suggestions. It is very important to report to Terry any links that fail to work, so he can change the link - his email address is on most pages near the bottom.

"Brick Walls"

What's this all about?
Have we reduced genealogy to building walls? Well sometimes we have built our own walls that we can not get past. What I mean by that is how we do research. We sometimes get excited about new leads or the volume of new information. When this happens, we sometimes do not begin to build a solid foundation for our research... making sure of our sources and evaluating the evidence before we continue. Now, you would think that building a poor foundation would make tumbling a brick wall easier! This fact would be valid except that we have piled a lot of garbage & other waste products around the wall to fortify it. Like the old joke about college degrees: "BS, MS & PHD" - the last being "piled higher & deeper." You might ask about making a solid foundation, wouldn't that make it harder to knock down a brick wall? No, because your documentation and sources provide lots of doors and windows to the previous generations.
However, sometimes we have been doing quality work building our family history, but records are missing or there seem to be few clues to where to look for our ancestors. Much has been written on this subject. Cyndi's List has a whole category devoted to this subject with 38 links to sites that attempt to help us tear down brick walls stopping us from going back in time. The category is called: "Hit a Brick Wall?" http://www.cyndislist.com/hitbrick.htm The first link is for buying a copy of the book "500 Brick Wall Solutions to Genealogical Problems"... we have a copy of this book at Willard Library. I reviewed it for the Tri-State Packet several years ago.

Tonight is the Jan. monthly TSGS meeting...
at Willard Library at 7:30 PM (12 Jan 2010). We meet the second Tuesday of each month except the vacation months of July & August. There will be 3 discussion groups that you may choose to join at the conclusion of our brief business meeting. Discussion Groups (choose one): A) Adoptions, led by Becky West, B) German Research, led by Karin Kirsch, C) Piftalls, led by Mary Lou Bevers (Mary Lou sent an email that she may not be able to make the meeting). Karin & Becky have prepared to lead their discussion groups... be sure to attend to participate. The roads are all good for traveling and we are experiencing a "heat wave!" - so, come to the meeting and learn something new.
The deadline for the March issue of the Tri-State Packet (TSGS Members quarterly journal) is January 15th. Please get your submissions to the Editor Brenda Legate by that time. She is looking forward to hearing from you! [Click on Brenda's name to send her a message.]

"Elder Benoni Stinson"

My connections to Benoni Stinson...
As a kid growing up in northeastern Warrick County, Indiana, I attended a small General Baptist Church in Heilman, Indiana. The church often spoke of the Oakland City General Baptist College (now University) and one of its founders, Benoni Stinson. He organized the Liberty Church in Evansville in 1823... now known as Howell General Baptist Church. He founded the present day General Baptist denomination.
Later in life, during the summers between attending classes at Evansville College (now University), I worked at George Koch Sons where I met Allan Puckett, who was my age and was an associate pastor at Evansville General Baptist Church. I began attending this church on a regular basis with Reverend Floyd Kirves the head pastor. I learned a lot of what a Christian was all about from Rev. Kirves and Brother Puckett. Just before, I answered the call to service during the Viet Nam conflict, I moved to Sterling, Illinois to help Allan with his first church... I was appointed the Sunday School Superintendent... here I was baptized in the General Baptist denomination. While I was in the U.S. Air Force, I met and fell in love with Becky and was married in a Southern Baptist Church by a General Baptist preacher, Allan Puckett (one of my two best friends). Dennis Avery was my other friend who served as my "best man."
After serving my 4 years in the USAF, Becky & I came home to Evansville and began raising a family and began attending Rev. Kirves' General Baptist church again. I had worked on my family history research since I was 12 years old, but did little letter writing or research while in the service. I got back into working on my family history. I learned and have documented that Benoni Stinson married a family member Ruth Martin. Ruth's father was John Martin, Jr. brother to my direct ancestor Thomas Martin. My ancestor Joseph Martin was the son of Thomas and a first cousin to Ruth Martin who married Benoni Stinson! I had grown up admiring Benoni Stinson not knowing that he had married into my father's family.
The December issue of our society's quarterly journal Tri-State Packet will have an article submitted by a Stinson descendant that includes Benoni & Ruth Stinson. Below are photos connected with Liberty General Baptist Church in the Howell west side neighborhood of Evansville. Click on photos for a larger, better image of each.
There are several grave markers for Benoni located in many sites... this is one erected in honor of his establishment of the Liberty Church
This is the south side of the former Liberty G.B. Church.
Above is a full view of the front side of the church.
Above the front doors of Howell General Baptist Church is the former Liberty name engraved in white stone.
As you could see in the photos of the church building there were several additions. Across the street to the west is the newest addition to Howell G.B. Church - the Family Life Center.

Make plans to attend our Annual TSGS Dinner Meeting on 14 Apr 2009 (next Tuesday night). The dinner will be held at the Sirloin Stockade, 4610 Bellemeade, Evansville, Indiana (near Green River Road). Dinner & fellowship will be from 5:30 to 6:30PM. About 6:30PM we will have welcoming remarks and announcements and present a few rewards to society members who have made a special contribution to the society or to genealogy in general. If anyone has any candidates, let me know. The President selects the recipients with the help of the TSGS Board.
About 7PM we will introduce our featured speaker - Posey County Circuit Court Judge James M. Redwine... presenting a look at his published book "Judge Lynch! - A Novel Based on Real-Life Accounts Exposing Secrets of a Small Southern Indiana Community." My wife, Becky, has read the book and said that it is very good and was hard to set it down until it was finished. She really enjoyed reading it. Visit Judge Redwine's Web Site.
