Tuesday's Meeting will Discuss DNA!
Why DNA? Do you come up empty about DNA when it comes to a simple understanding of this great new genealogical tool?
Come to our meeting this coming Tuesday night:
12 February 2013 6:30 PM at Willard Library – Bayard Room on the Second Floor.
Kenneth “Ken” E. Nowlan, Jr. will present a very interesting program on “Making Sense of DNA: How Can It Assist Genealogical Research.” How many of you have found people in your genealogical research and wondered if they were related, but could not find any proof. In today’s world there is a way to find that answer using DNA. We see on the news and on crime shows how DNA helps find the bad guys. Now you can find out how to use that technology in your research. Ken earned his Bachelors Degree from Indiana University and his Masters Degree from University of Pennsylvania. He became a Certified Genealogist (SM) from the Board for Certification of Genealogists, he is the Project Administrator for DNA Surname Project on FamilyTreeDNA and is a Member of Tri-State Genealogical Society.
You do not have to be a member to come and participate at the society’s monthly meetings.

This is a program you will not want to miss. We usually think of Biological warfare as something that happens or could happen in modern warfare. Our ancestors suffered biological attacks.
We will be looking forward to seeing you at the meeting and enjoying a very interesting and entertaining program.

"The Burning of a Cemetery"
'
Before I tell you about the burning cemetery, I want to tell you about Glenda Trapp working as a Judge of the 4-H Family Tree Projects at the Vanderburgh County 4-H Fair. I have served as the County Superintendent of this project since it began and the second year Carol Lantaff became my Assistant (later, it would be Mary Deutsch). That year Glenda was roped into being a Judge of the 4-H Fair Notebook Exhibits. She was assigned the Clover Division (the youngest age group), these kids were the beginners and Glenda soon set the way these projects would be done and how they would be judged by the judges of the other two divisions. No one ever questioned her leadership in this matter, simply because it made everyone's job a little easier and more consistent year after year. Glenda entertained all of us involved with the judging of these projects with her keen sense of humor and wit as she discovered again and again the funny side of what a kid did or said in the exhibit. She never belittled them, she just saw humor anywhere she looked for it. She was a Judge for at least eight years. No one will ever be able to judge these projects with the intense serious level that she maintained and still point out tons of humor to us all. There is a reason for telling this story before telling the story of the burning cemetery, so now I can go back to it.

Several
of us that were working on the Cemetery Committee found ourselves in
Union Township again and Glenda was passing out axes, tree trimmers
and chain saws to clear out an overgrown cemetery, so we could read
the monuments that were hidden in the underbrush and thicket of small
trees, briars and ivy. We worked and worked trying to clear all this
mess when the farmer who owned the land suggested that we just burn
it out. There would be no safety hazard to be concerned with since
the cemetery was surrounded by a large concrete wall to protect it
from flooding from the Ohio River. So, I was assigned the job to
spread the gasoline around and light it to start a blazing fire to
burn away the underbrush. Glenda was good at delegating such duties.
The fire took off very rapidly, and me and my jug of gasoline
quickly retreated to the wall of which I had a little difficulty
negotiating my freedom, but as the fire shot up the 20 foot trees and
I began to feel the heat of the fire I easily climbed over the wall.
There was no doubt about it we were going to always go the extra mile
to transcribe the information on these stones. We would probe for
buried markers, dig them up, turn them over, chop down brush to get
to them and even burn the cemetery down to copy its hidden
information. Glenda took hundreds of photos of us doing all these
odd tasks of "unearthing" or "burning" out a
cemetery's secrets.
One
Christmas, the Tri-State Genealogical Society asked Glenda to make a
presentation concerning the Cemetery Committee's work. Out came the
slide projector and some very interesting slides on what it takes to
really do a thorough job of getting this very useful genealogical
resource available in book form. For years as the TSGS 4-H
Coordinator for the 4-H Family Tree Project TSGS Awards Program, I
would invite the Champion 4-H exhibitors and their notebooks to the
Christmas meeting. Glenda was aware that these kids and most of
their parents all knew me, so she pointed me out in the slides from
time to time, showing how involved I was in doing genealogy work. As
she concluded her presentation, she wanted to show just one more
slide. It was of me with the most outlandish look on my face fleeing
from that fire as I was struggling to climb over that wall. That was
at least 25 years ago and 4-H'ers and TSGS members are still talking
about that slide and they are still laughing about it!!!

Becky West, TSGS Program Chair, has announced that the program will feature
"A Little Genealogy Humor" and an appearance by Indiana Bones. This will be Indiana Bones first public appearance. Indiana Bones (aka: John G. West) is a self-proclaimed "Cemetery Geek" as published in the Evansville Courier & Press recently. Indiana Bones will briefly show some suggested items that would be good to take on any field trip, especially a genealogical trip or "cemetery hopping!" He will have some tips on how to maintain good health and be safe. Indiana Bones will provide everyone with a list of important things to include in a First Aid Kit and a cemetery bag to help you find the graves you are looking for. Hopefully the program will be entertaining and give you some ideas to use on your next field trip!
During the short meeting, members will elect officers for 2012-2013.

From the First Mate's Photo Album...

A few photos from Tuesday night's TSGS meeting with Stan Schmitt speaking on the Civil War in Evansville. Becky West (right - standing) is introducing our guest speaker to those in attendance.

Stan with his arms stretched out was saying that at a previous TSGS meeting, he had been interrupted by a new young security guard because it was almost 8 PM, the normal closing time for the library. The guard asked everyone to leave in 5 minutes... the librarian and I quickly informed the guard that we were conducting a meeting and he just interrupted the guest speaker. We also told him that we generally ran over about 1/2 hour over the normal closing time. The security guard was nick-named "Skippy" by several un-named TSGS members! Stan then quickly wrapped up his program in a few minutes, although he had about 15 to 20 minutes more to finish. Everyone present enjoyed Stan's program very much and wanted him to return "to finish the war!"
As Stan is speaking those in attendance were listening very closely. Stan is a good speaker with an interesting subject. He finished the war for us and everyone enjoyed his program very much! We ended with having two very good programs from Stan Schmitt. Thanks, Stan!

What's New on the TSGS Cruiser Blog?

Several times in the last week or so, I have asked if anyone could spot what is different or new to the blog page for our society. I got some very good responses, but not anything new... just items not noticed!
If you look just above the date & title for this blog, notice: "Next TSGS Meeting" with date, speaker & topic of program. This is new!!! What is nice about it is simply that it will be near the top of the blogs every day and I can easily change it from month to month or in the event the speaker cancels or changes the program. I can put here that a meeting has been canceled for whatever reason, generally due to bad weather.
Now, if anyone wants to know the date of the next meeting or who is talking about what... it will be there where it can easily be seen without scrolling through looking for the meeting notice blog. I want to point out that if you wanted to see this same info, you can look under the "Blog Archive" or under the "Labels" listed in the left-hand column of this site. And you can always go to the "TSGS Main Deck" on the society's Internet Web Site: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~intsgs/index.html under "Upcoming Events" about half way down the page.
