From the FIRST MATE's
PHOTO ALBUM...

'

The Frog Follies was in town...
with over 4,000 street rod cars in and about everywhere this past weekend. Linda Young-Niemeier took photos of these cool vehicles while the members of the Scott Township Fire Department collected for the MDA!
Jeff Niemeier is collecting a donation from the driver of this great car! Below is a poster to identify the workers for MDA along that intersection. (Click on photos to get a larger, clearer image.)

Love this yellow fender/hood view showing the open louvres! Below is a Scott Township Fire Department member waiting on cars to stop and make a donation to MDA. Henry Ford once remarked that consumers could buy any color car they wanted as long as it was black! ;)
Below Jenny Griesmer is getting donations from this bright yellow street rod.
The following colorful modified pre-1949 street rods were photographed by JGWest.
I believe that the above was the greenest of all of the cars I saw at the 4-H Center. The beautiful car below has a unique water wave with its patriotic stars & stripes!
There were many orange colored cars, but this was one of my favorites.
This one had a very nice mini-rod duplicate... only the engine on the mini-car was more "souped-up" than the original.

"Ahhhh! Its Spring Time!"

'

First Day of Spring!

- Daffodil photo submitted by Linda L. Young-Niemeier

Many of us have been waiting quite some time for this day to come!

MARCH 20th. is the first day of spring, or vernal equinox as astronomers would have it. "Vernal" means "of or pertaining to spring." "Equinox" means "equal night." As the angle of the earth's inclination toward the sun changes throughout the year, lengthening or shortening the days according to season and hemisphere, there are two times annually when day and night are of more-or-less equal length: the spring and autumnal equinoxes. These celestial tipping points have been recognized for thousands of years... [Quoted from About.com: Urban Legends Can You Balance Eggs on End During the Spring Equinox?

From the FIRST MATE's
PHOTO ALBUM...

'
Winter brings us those cold, dreary, snowy days, but our friend Linda L. Young-Niemeier found some wonderful wildlife to capture some very nice, cheery winter pics!

This squirrel is munching on some seeds & oranges. click on the image for a larger photo.

This is my favorite... it looks like a Christmas card or a post card. Notice the seed in his beak.

"Old School Houses"

.
Just like old barns, we can find old school buildings that are just abandoned... left to fall down and eventually vanish along with its history.

This small brick school house (School No. 4) is located in Parkers Settlement in Posey County, Indiana.
The building seems in reasonably good shape, considering it was built in 1892 as indicated by the corner stone pictured below. I tried to learn what I could about this school and the names listed in the Posey County history books at Willard Library, but I did not find anything.
Abandoned schools made of wood or bricks can be found throughout the tri-state area. Some have recorded histories, but for many the building has lasted longer than its students and anyone that knows about any part of its history.

Marker/Plaque/Monument Monday

.
[Click on photos to enlarge the image]

Happy Labor Day!

Today's Plaque is located at the LST 325 display - docked on the Ohio River near Evansville's Waterworks Plant.
The photo below is of the LST 325 docked at Evansville, IN. During World War II many of these were built in Evansville.

The first thought was that this should be saved for Veterans Day or even Memorial Day, but decided that Labor Day is a good day to post this, since Evansville area men & women labored hard to build these war ships. The plaque itself honors those who served aboard these LST's... today we honor those who built the LST's, as well.
