Christmas Social - 11 Dec 2012

TSGS hopes you can attend our 2012 Christmas Social at Willard Library on the second floor.  If you want, you can bring a snack for everyone to enjoy.  There will be snacks & refreshments available.  You do not have to be a member to attend... so, come one, come all!!!

The whole event is informal... allowing time to socialize, brag about your latest family discoveries, ask others about your "brick walls" in your research.  Remember that someone in the society probably has had to deal with a similar problem you may be experiencing and just maybe - they figured out how to get around it!

The get-together is always a great time to get to know some of the TSGS members.  There is an excellent chance that Indiana Bones will make an appearance!  Who knows, maybe Santa might show-up, too!

TSGS Program Reported

"Traveling at 33 RPM in an IPad World"

Retired USI Professor and TSGS Board Member Larry Goss gave a very informative and interesting program entitled "Traveling at 33 RPM in an IPad World".   He presented an interactive program designed to inform about what we need to do to move into the world of technology.   He showed various methods of storage that has been used in the past and currently.   Several members told what other societies are doing.   One example was about going to a seminar and at registration was given a thumb drive with the option of getting printed information for $40.00 which was thick and heavy. A problem that many of us was wondering... how to implement our membership and keep control of our Packet publication?   It seemed to all come together.   We could require all members to have an email address with membership beginning with our next year and the Packet could be emailed each quarter.  This could be announced in the June edition of the Packet and offer for an additional fee to send them a thumb drive with all 30 years of the Packet preloaded, there is a company that can load this for us economically.   With this thumb drive when each edition of the Packet comes out the membership could download it to their thumb drive keeping it current.

TSGS Meeting Report

TSGS Meeting
Willard Library
Bayard Room
11 Sep 2012

Since this was 911 Patriot's Day, President Don Counts brought in his "Flag of Honor" with all of the names of those killed in the 911 attack in New York.  The names are used to make the stripes.  Vice-President John G. West helped Don show the flag at the meeting.  With about 30 people present the Bayard Room was a little crowded.
Earlier in the meeting, Special Collections Director Lyn Martin gave the library report mentioning up-coming events and informed the society that due to costs and security, all patrons needed to be out of the building no later than 8PM.  Since we have been meeting at 7PM this put pressure on us to get everything in and adjourn the meeting before 8 O'Clock.

The Finance Committee with approval of the TSGS Board of Directors proposed the 2012-2013 Budget which was accepted by the membership.

Indiana Bones presented his "Cemetery Stories" for the program.  The program was cut short in order to be out by 8PM.  The society may have to meet earlier or meet on weekends to avoid cutting meetings short.

TSGS Meeting Recap For Those Not Attending

'
Here is a summary of portions of our TSGS monthly membership meeting Tuesday night at willard Library. It was Valentine's Day so the attendance was down a little. We did have 17 to show up. To see a bigger, better image of each photo just click on it and then return to this page. In the first photo, President Don Counts has just called the meeting to order (note clock in upper left... our meetings start at 7PM the second Tuesday of each month). During the meeting President Counts made several announcements. He reminded everyone to make sure we have their current mailing address for the member's journal the Tri-State Packet and that dues are due in July for the fiscal year 2012-2013. The President has appointed John G. West as Chair of the Nominating Committee for the next fiscal year's officers that will be elected in June.

The next photo shows a shot of those in attendance while Secretary Kim Nightingale reads the minutes of the previous meeting.Below, TSGS Program Chair Becky West is introducing our speaker for the night. Our speaker was Kim Nightingale who provided us a very interesting and entertaining program she called "Hoosiers on the Oregon Trail" from reports/diaries of many who traveled the route for land. She mentioned at the end that one of the travelers was her ancestor. After the program, Becky West gave each lady a little gift to recognize the pioneer efforts of our lady ancestors. Each had a heart to show how much each of us appreciate the efforts of all women - today & in the past! The drawing for the attendance prize was won by Betty Counts who chose a TSGS membership for 2012-2013. The attendance prize is the society's way of saying thanks for attending the meetings. The programs alone are worth the time to attend, but we wanted to show how much it means for people to visit the society's meetings! The meeting was adjourned at 7:50 PM.

Next meeting will be March 13th. when Stan Schmitt will complete is program of Evansville's involvement with the Civil War. His program last fall was cut short by the library's new, young security guard that was totally unaware that we were conducting a meeting and generally stayed a little past the normal closing time. Stan's presentation was so good that everyone wanted he to come back to let us know how the war ended! :)

Summer Vacation time for TSGS
has come to an end...

... the society is ready to begin an exciting new year!

Our first meeting of the 2010-2011 year will be next Tuesday night - 14 Sep 2010 at 7PM (notice we are meeting at a different time, one half hour earlier... our new time to be able to leave a little earlier for the library employees). We always meet on the second Tuesday of each month except for the vacation months of July & August.

Kenneth Gilkey of the Ohio Valley Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution will be our guest speaker. He will tell us about the exciting, interesting tale of the capture of Ft. Sackville in Vincennes during the Revolutionary War.

Another important event will happen just 4 days after this first TSGS meeting on Saturday, 18 Sep 2010 at Willard Library... a free all-day genealogy workshop proudly sponsored by the Tri-State Genealogical Society. The event begins at 8AM and goes through 4PM. It is called "Tree Roots" with the four sessions presented by Terry Prall, a retired teacher; his genealogical adventure began in 1990. He attended the Institute of Genealogy & Historical Research at Samford University in 2001 and The Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy, 2000-present.

The TSGS Editor
of our quarterly journal The Tri-State Packet

sent out an email yesterday to remind officers & regular contributors of the July 15th. deadline to submit material for the September issue. Send anything you think might be of general use by some of our members. Recently the amount of material being sent in has been a little less than in the past... so now is a good time to submit something with a better chance that it will get into this or the next issue. Send what you have addressed to Tri-State Packet Editor: "Brenda Legate" blegate@att.net. Little short tid-bits are needed for page fillers, as well.

Last Night's TSGS Meeting

'

Our 08 June 2010 meeting...

This is the last meeting of the 2009-10 year for TSGS. The sky turned very dark in the afternoon threatening a bad storm was on its way. We ended up with a small crowd of 16 people. We installed the elected Officers & Directors for 2010-11 that begins on 01 July. After our business was completed, everyone split off into discussion groups. No one had a camera, so I attempted to use my cell phone to get some photos. Most did not come out well... the ones posted had to be doctored to make them barely acceptable. The first two looked best in sepia-tone.
Bettie Cook led a group in discussing courthouse records. L-R: Janet Mann, Becky West, Kim Nightingale, Bettie Cook.
A second discussion group was led by Mary Lou Bevers concerning Internet online databases. L-R: Don Counts, Mary Lou Bevers, Dan Korb, Doug Korb.
Above is Doug Korb who was installed for her third term as Vice-President of TSGS.
Above is Don Counts who was installed as a Director of the TSGS Board. Don has served in the past as one of our TSGS Presidents.
Karin M. Kirsch was installed as the TSGS Recording Secretary. Karin has served in the past as a TSGS President.
- Photos taken & submitted by JGWest (we need a volunteer to take photos for the society!)

It is time for membership renewals (please submit dues of only $12 by 01 Jul 2010). You can print out a renewal form from our regular web site: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~intsgs/join.html
We are still holding the cost of membership down as best as we can, while most genealogical societies are charging $20 or more.

By the way, we have a new Webmaster... Terry Winchester. He has been working hard updating some pages and improving navigation from page to page by providing a navigational bar on every page! Look for other improvements and additions. Be sure to let him know how he is doing and offer suggestions. It is very important to report to Terry any links that fail to work, so he can change the link - his email address is on most pages near the bottom.

Please consider sending in contributions for our members' quarterly journal,
The Tri-State Packet. The next deadline for contributions is July 15th. for the September issue!

Nominating Committee Report...

Karin Kirsch has stepped up to be the nominee for Recording Secretary! Karin has served several offices for TSGS including President. I first met her many years ago as a 4-H parent with children in the 4-H Family Tree Project that I served as Vanderburgh County Project Superintendent (TSGS member Carol Lantaff was my Assistant Project Superintendent). She became a member because of TSGS sponsorship of awards for the county project as did several other parents over the years. The committee reports that we are still looking for a Program Chair.

Les Lantaff is recovering from heart surgery...

I mentioned Carol Lantaff above - she has been active in the society longer than I have. Her mother Edna Goebel was a friend of mine and very active in TSGS, as well. Carol's husband just had bypass & heart valve replacement surgeries and is recovering quite well.
