Marker/Plaque/Monument Monday

During Memorial Day weekend...

Becky & I were out decorating family graves with flowers in the area cemeteries, as we do each year.  Mom and Dad are buried in Alexander Memorial Park Cemetery along with four of Mom's brothers.  We have cemetery plots for us there, as well.  Memorial Park provides some cookies and something to drink and a nice room to get cool after being in the hot, sunny outdoors, plus restrooms!  TSGS member Jill Brinkley works there.  Jill along with Chad Williams were TSGS Seminar Co-Chairs for several years.  When we got to the office, Jill was running around helping a visitor find someone buried there.  While standing in the office waiting for her return, I noticed these very attractive and unusual plaques on the wall.

 These two Century Club Awards (shown above and below were) awarded to Jillian Brinkley in 2009 and 2010 "For Excellence, Dedication, and Commitment to Outstanding Service."  A nice tribute to her professional work!  

A few years back, Jill was a singer and sang with the Don Lee Trio.  Don Lee is the husband of TSGS member Judy Foreman Lee and fellow Orange County, North Carolina researcher.

Trovillion Cemetery T13S R6E Sec 29N 37* W088* (Pope County, Illinois) Enumerated March 11, 2009. This cemetery has suffered the forces of nature and man. If the cemetery were cleaned more monuments might be found. Invasive species along with fallen limbs from an ice storm make it difficult to maneuver through the cemetery. The blue blooms of the vinca groundcover though offer brightness and hope. The cemetery is about a mile east of Old Brownfield on Deputy Tower Road, then about 2000' north of the road. A field surrounds the cemetery; a farm road passes beside it on the west. Enumeration starts closest to the farm road, beginning at the northwest side of the cemetery.

Dorothy Helm Beanard

John, this is called an anthropomorphic sandstone marker or human-effigy shaped gravestone. This one is in Old Home Cemetery, Pope Co IL marking the grave of Dorothy Helm Beanard [b. ca 1766] died April 5, 1846, she was the wife of Frederick A. Beanard. And that's the rest of the story!

6:30 p.m. Help Session "FALSIFIED LEGAL RECORDS AND OTHER PITFALLS " Led by Mary Lou Bevers, Genealogist
7:30 p.m. Regular Meeting "Browning Genealogy" Presented by Browning Associates.

Special thanks to Mary Lou Bevers for volunteering at the last minute to give the HELP Session when the scheduled speaker cancelled. The Browning Genealogy concerns the Online Browning Database of obituaries and news clippings found in the Evansville newspapers. Both of these programs will be great to attend and are free to members and non-members alike – reservations not required. Come and visit us and enjoy these two very good and useful programs.

Next month's Annual Dinner Meeting will be 14 Apr 2009 - It will be at the Sirloin Stockade! "Judge Lynch! - A Novel Based on Real-Life Accounts Exposing Secrets of Small Southern Indiana Community.” Presented by Posey County Circuit Court Judge James M. Redwine, Speaker & Author.

I promised to list the names of those in the 1994 TSGS Annual Seminar photo. Here is what I have: (L to R) Mary Lou Bevers, Unknown Lady (Rena Goss?), Mary Lou Winsett, Joan Elliot Parker, Unknown Man, Unknown Woman, Karin Kirsch, Cynthia Maasberg, Judy Lee, Seminar Speaker - Helen Leary, Bettie Ann Cook and Betty Ewers.

This afternoon the TSGS Board will meet to map out the 2009-2010 Budget and plan the balance of the 2008-2009 fiscal year with an expected purchase of some great Kentucky & Virginia County court records on microfilm. This will be a very nice addition to the already great Willard Library Genealogical Collection. All genealogical research materials purchased by TSGS are housed at Willard Library for the free use of anyone that visits the library.
