Armed Forces Day Weekend

Are you aware of Armed Forces Day...
Many Americans are not familiar with the holiday unless they are a veteran or had someone in the military service. It is celebrated on 15 May of each year. Saturday was the day this year. The Ohio Valley Chapter of the Indiana Society Sons of the American Revolution conducted a meeting on Saturday and marked the day by displaying flags of each of the five major branches of our Armed Forces.

TSGS member Don Counts was at that SAR meeting. Don is also a member of the Indiana Patriot Guard Riders - members attend military funerals at the request of the families to ensure that protestors are kept away from the funeral ceremony. We do live in strange times! Don went after our morning meeting with the Patriot Guard to tour cemeteries where soldiers that were killed in action are buried in southwestern Indiana.

Don served in the U.S. Marines and is shown above wearing his Patriot Guard shirt saluting the U.S. Flag at our SAR meeting in Willard Library.

Hose House #9...
is one of Evansville's newest fire stations located on Keystone Drive.

It was built in 1989, just north of Morgan Avenue & east of Green River Road.

A very large "9" helps to identify this building, perhaps the smallest in size.

The fire fighters proudly fly the U.S. flag out front of the building. It looked very beautiful the morning this photo was taken!

From the FIRST MATE's PHOTO ALBUM...

I found two very special flags in McCoy Cemetery near Monroe City, Indiana (Knox County). They were left for the graves of Walter S. McCoy and his wife Garnett A. ~ he died in 1982 aged at 76 and she died in 2000 aged at 90. The small flags are embroidered/stitched... one for each: "Father" & "Mother." Behind each flag is a bouquet of beautiful artificial flowers.

This couple was married for 54 years when Walter died.

Walter's flag says "Father" with a spray of blue & yellow flowers.

Garnett's flag says "Mother" with a bouquet of a large red rose & two buds.

Vincennes Rendezvous

Vincennes, Indiana

The re-enactment battles are really cool to watch. They have a Fife & Drum Corps that perform on the battle ground as well as throughout the park. The cannons set off all of the car alarms & the blast of the muskets make this event seem real. Soldiers representing England, France, Germany (to list a few) plus the colonist & Indians with women & children all dressed in period attire, makes this event a great family historical, educational & entertaining outing.

The above photo is of our Indiana Society Sons of the American Revolution's tent at the Rendezvous with a lot of Colonial flags. The red & green striped flag behind & to the right of the tent is the George Rogers Clark flag that they carried when his men captured Ft. Sackville. TSGS member, Becky West (dressed in a red top), is standing in front of the brochure table. Click on the photos to get an enlarged view.

We are busy packing up things at the campto move to a big storage unit to later have a huge rummage sale and sort out what to keep. With limited time, I decided to share this photo that I took of the beautiful Veterans Memorial at Oak Hill Cemetery, Evansville, Indiana


This photo was taken during the winter two years ago from just in front of the office on the hill with the zoom setting on my little digital camera, although you might detect a slight green tinge in the evergreens, the background appears to be just a black & white photo with the flags in color. I think it is a neat effect that was a bonus to the flags waving in the wind.
