2010 TSGS Annual Dinner Meeting...

With a good turn out and a great speaker, last night's event at Sirloin Stockade was enjoyed by all. In the first photo below, I had just presented Don Counts with a TSGS Certificate of Appreciation for his numerous contributions to the TSGS Cruiser Blog. From March 2009 to March 2010, Don made 40 significant contributions! In all 41 people sent in contributions during this period for a total of over 160 daily blogs which represented about 52% of the blogs that were published during that year time span! The other 48% came from me as blog master with the bulk of that as TSGS news. I am very pleased with the number of people who helped with the blog. Three others were mentioned as major contributors: Chris Myers, Linda Young-Niemeier & Taneya Koonce.

We recognized Brenda Jerome with a TSGS Certificate of Appreciation for her contributions to the Tri-State Packet and her 12 contributions to the TSGS Cruiser Blog. Three others mentioned who contibutes articles to the Packet were Larry Goss, Carol Bartlett & Gilbert Schmitt.

A Certificate of Appreciation was presented to Connie Conrad for her significant contribution to the genealogical world with her organizing & indexing records in Posey County, Indiana. Connie listed several of the people present that has helped her on this monumental project: Don Pierce, Janet Mann, Deb Travers, Vannetta McDowell


Below is pictured our guest speaker, Harold Morgan, and Claudette Pfingston (who sent me these photos). Mr. Morgan a noted local historian, lecturer, and author presented a very interesting slide program, "Evansville During the Depression."

The TSGS 2010-11 Officers Nominating Committee announced a partial list of the slate of officers and that they are seeking nominees for Secretary & Program Chair plus a few more Board Directors. If you are interested in serving or have a suggestion of someone contact any on the committee: John West, Doug Korb, Bettie Cook or Don Counts.

About 25 years ago I suggested that we give Certificates of Appreciation to TSGS members for promoting the society, genealogy or other related activities. Usually the President of TSGS prepares these certificates with signatures, dates and recipient's name. This year Karin Kirsch was the TSGS President and was passing out the certificates to several deserving members. Mary Lou Bevers was being recognized, but the certificate was blank... e veryone got a big laugh out of it and later the signatures, date & Mary Lou's name was inscribed! I asked Edna Kasper (a former TSGS President & dear friend) to help me design the original certificate. 4-H Genealogy Project Awards...

The Glenda K. Trapp Memorial Award Certificate was awarded to two 4-H'ers this week by TSGS President John G. West & Board Director Becky West. This award was created over 25 years ago by TSGS to recognize the achievements in the 4-H Genealogy Project for the area county 4-H programs. Becky & I are dressed in Revolutionary War/Colonial period dress, since I also presented an Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) Outstanding Citizenship Award in each county. I serve as the Indiana Society SAR 4-H Award Program State Chair.

Elects State Officers

Four members of the Evansville based Ohio Valley Chapter of INSSAR were elected to state offices on 18 April 2009. Two are TSGS members (*). Second from the left is John G. West * - Historian, fifth is J.D. Strouth - District One Director, sixth T. Rex Legler, II - Recording Secretary, seventh dressed in Revolutionary War red, white & blue uniform is Don Counts* - Chaplain.

Memorial Service being conducted for the past year's deceased members across the state. West, conducting ceremony is State Chaplain Don Counts, Rose Holder State Registrar Robert Howell, SAR Flag Carrier James Arnold. John West is placing a rose in the vase in honor of Earl Sinnett who died this year as a member of the Ohio Valley Chapter. Compatriot Sinnett is the father of TSGS member Cheri Baumberger.


Photo of Memorial Service with the four Musket Carriers to the left (Rex Legler is at the far left). Once all of the deceased members were honored one by one with a rose being placed in the vase, these four Compatriots fired their flint lock musket as a salute to the deceased members.

The State Annual Meeting of the House of Delegates was held in the Indianapolis Propylaeum Club Building (not shown) with the Memorial Service held on the lawn of the Propyleum. During the state meeting, John West, Don Counts and J.D. Strouth each were presented the INSSAR Bronze Service Medals for their contributions to their local chapter. John West was also awarded the INSSAR Silver Service Medal for his work as a District Director.

THE CAPTAIN'S LOG –TSGS News

TSGS had a great dinner meeting last night at the Sirloin Stockade with a nice crowd. Everyone seemed to have a great time. We recognized 3 individuals for their contributions toward the society's blog (TSGS Cruiser Blog that you are reading now). These three each were awarded a TSGS Certificate of Appreciation for being great TSGS Bloggers: Don Counts, Brenda Jerome and Chris Myers.

We had a very interesting program concerning the newly published book "Judge Lynch" written by Posey County Circuit Court Judge James M. Redwine. A huge list of microfilm was read off to those attending that will be soon available to everyone at Willard Library thanks to the Acquisitions Committee: Brenda Jerome (Chair), Mary Lou Bevers, Rena Goss.

“TSGS 4-H Genealogy Project Award”

Last night Becky & I went to Boonville, Indiana to present the TSGS “Glenda K. Trapp Memorial Award” (photo above – click on photos to enlarge) at the Warrick County 4-H Achievement Banquet. The county has a committee that selects winners in a lot of different categories based on their 4-H participation and other activities in the community, school and other organizations.


In the above photo I am presenting the award certificate to this year's winner, Tyler Kroeger. She happen to be the Division 2 County Champion last year and received a Special Merit Award for her notebook exhibit at the Indiana State Fair. I judged her exhibit on the county level and thought it was excellent. I judged Division 3 exhibits at the State Fair and was pleased to see how well she had done at the state.


The above photo is a posed photo after the banquet to get a nice keepsake photo for our regular TSGS web page and for her (and her mother) to keep. TSGS has been presenting this award to several southwest Indiana county 4-H members over the last 25 years. I encouraged TSGS to provide this award and I have served as the TSGS 4-H Coordinator ever since... a job that I enjoy and feel it is an honor to get to meet and recognize these outstanding 4-H members.


This last photo is for another award that I present to 4-H members from the Indiana Society Sons of the American Revolution. I serve as the State Chair of the 4-H Youth Awards Committee. This young lady, Jean Ann Scarafia, won the SAR Outstanding Citizenship Award Pin. I am wearing the SAR member's badge on the neck ribbon and on my tie I am also wearing my “I Love Genealogy” pin and to even things out I wore my Indiana State Fair Judge Pin. - Compiled by JGWest
