IMPORTANT NOTICE: This time of the year, weather conditions may cause the society to cancel meetings... the decision to cancel usually is determined the day of the meeting, providing short notice. We will use a policy for automatic cancellation if the Evansville Vanderburgh County School Corporation cancels school the morning of the meeting. Since a bad weather system may develop later in the day (or that night), check this blog for cancellation notice or call Willard Library.

One of my favorite local speakers will be presenting one of his best programs: "The Legend of Washington Irving." Robert N. Hall will give the program for our October TSGS meeting. I heard this program nearly 20 years ago and can not wait to hear it again. In the program, Bob tells us about this famous author and then discribes two of his best remembered classics: Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hallow. Bob dresses as Ichabod Crane to give the whole program some character!

TSGS Meeting tonight!!!!!

The Tri-State Genealogical Society will hold its first meeting of the 2010-2011 year at Willard Library on the second floor. The meeting will begin at 7 PM... this is a change from 7:30 PM. The society voted to start the meetings 1/2 hour earlier to ensure leaving a little earlier for the library staff.

Ken Gilkey will be our guest speaker from the Ohio Valley Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution where ken serves as President and is a member of the chapter's Speakers Bureau. He will tell us about the Indiana Revolutionary War battle where George Rogers Clark captured Ft. Sackville. It is an interesting story! I have attended Ken's program twice and enjoyed learning about this part of the war that most do not know about.

Summer Vacation time for TSGS
has come to an end...

... the society is ready to begin an exciting new year!

Our first meeting of the 2010-2011 year will be next Tuesday night - 14 Sep 2010 at 7PM (notice we are meeting at a different time, one half hour earlier... our new time to be able to leave a little earlier for the library employees). We always meet on the second Tuesday of each month except for the vacation months of July & August.

Kenneth Gilkey of the Ohio Valley Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution will be our guest speaker. He will tell us about the exciting, interesting tale of the capture of Ft. Sackville in Vincennes during the Revolutionary War.

Another important event will happen just 4 days after this first TSGS meeting on Saturday, 18 Sep 2010 at Willard Library... a free all-day genealogy workshop proudly sponsored by the Tri-State Genealogical Society. The event begins at 8AM and goes through 4PM. It is called "Tree Roots" with the four sessions presented by Terry Prall, a retired teacher; his genealogical adventure began in 1990. He attended the Institute of Genealogy & Historical Research at Samford University in 2001 and The Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy, 2000-present.

The TSGS Editor

sent out an email yesterday to remind officers & regular contributors of the July 15th. deadline to submit material for the September issue. Send anything you think might be of general use by some of our members. Recently the amount of material being sent in has been a little less than in the past... so now is a good time to submit something with a better chance that it will get into this or the next issue. Send what you have addressed to Tri-State Packet Editor: "Brenda Legate" blegate@att.net. Little short tid-bits are needed for page fillers, as well.

This will be our last meeting until September after all of the summer vacations are over. The society membership has voted to start our meetings at 7:oo PM starting with the September meeting.

We are still holding the cost of membership down as best as we can, while most genealogical societies are charging $20 or more.

By the way, we have a new Webmaster... Terry Winchester. He has been working hard updating some pages and improving navigation from page to page by providing a navigational bar on every page! Look for other improvements and additions. Be sure to let him know how he is doing and offer suggestions. It is very important to report to Terry any links that fail to work, so he can change the link - his email address is on most pages near the bottom.

Please consider sending in contributions for our members' quarterly journal, The Tri-State Packet. The next deadline for contributions is July 15th. for the September issue!

Nominating Committee Report...

Karin Kirsch has stepped up to be the nominee for Recording Secretary! Karin has served several offices for TSGS including President. I first met her many years ago as a 4-H parent with children in the 4-H Family Tree Project that I served as Vanderburgh County Project Superintendent (TSGS member Carol Lantaff was my Assistant Project Superintendent). She became a member because of TSGS sponsorship of awards for the county project as did several other parents over the years. The committee reports that we are still looking for a Program Chair.

Les Lantaff is recovering from heart surgery...

I mentioned Carol Lantaff above - she has been active in the society longer than I have. Her mother Edna Goebel was a friend of mine and very active in TSGS, as well. Carol's husband just had bypass & heart valve replacement surgeries and is recovering quite well.

At yesterday's TSGS Board Meeting, it was decided, at the invitation of Willard Library, to Co-Sponsor the Tree Roots Workshop later this fall.

The 2010-11 Nominating Committee appointments were announced by the President: Brenda Jerome (Chair), Don Counts, Bettie Cook & Doug Korb. They will soon be asking members to serve in offices.

The Board will recommend at the May regular membership meeting that we will change the meeting start time from 7:30 PM to 7:00 PM in order for the library to close up a little earlier. If accepted by the members present this will begin at our September meeting the first meeting for 2010-11.

Come join us at our April 13th. Dinner Meeting at Sirloin Stockade on Bellemeade near Green River Road. Harold Morgan (Historian, Speaker, Author) will present "EVANSVILLE DURING THE DEPRESSION."

Today is one of those rare days when there is two blogs for one day!

Just like our wide-eyed frog seems to be saying, "Oh my, I almost forgot our March TSGS Meeting is coming up this Tuesday night at 7:30 PM at Willard Library!"

I hope none of you forget. Spring is almost here and it is time to get out and enjoy some better weather with some warm sunshine. Yesterday on Facebook several of my friends were running out to take photos in cemeteries for Find-A-Grave... Vannetta McDowell, Christopher Myers & Cheri Baumberger. My West Y-DNA cousins were fine-tuning a time line of some information that we plan to research in depth to dig out new leads for our common ancestor (yet to be discovered). My earlier post today was about the 2010 National Genealogical Society Conference. Yesterday I posted my preview of the new NBC TV series called "Who Do You Think You Are?" with a link to watch it online if you missed it. Spring always brings out a new flurry of genealogical activity as it does bringing out leaves, flowers and wildlife.

So, why not attend this month's TSGS meeting? After a brief business meeting, we will break-up into 3 groups for general discussions on the following topics: Discussion Groups (choose one) A) Court Cases, led by Brenda Jerome, B) Posey County Research, led by Connie Conrad, C) Vital Records, led by Mary Lou Bevers.

Meeting Notice

This Tuesday night (09 Feb 2010) is our February meeting (2nd. Tuesday). The TSGS Program Chair has scheduled an interesting forum for this meeting: "What’s New? Have you discovered new websites, books, etc. that might have wide-spread interest for others that you will share at this time? Fun Time, Tell us about something FUNNY that you have discovered or that happened during your research (two minute limit)." Please come and join us!

You do not have to be a member of our society to attend our meetings or events... although we welcome all to join. Being a member of a genealogical society provides opportunities to learn helpful research news & techniques that is helpful from the beginner to the very advanced. We learn something new each month. Also being a member helps the society to acquire more research materials for Willard Library... TSGS has supplied about 1/3rd. of the material available in the library for historians & genealogists.

Karin & Becky have prepared to lead their discussion groups... be sure to attend to participate. The roads are all good for traveling and we are experiencing a "heat wave!" - so, come to the meeting and learn something new.
