"Esteemed Lady Dies" - 1908 Paducah-News Democrat

You never know where a piece of information will turn up. The following death notice appeared in the Paducah-News Democrat, Paducah, Kentucky, on Wednesday, 15 July 1908. - Submitted by Brenda Joyce Jerome, CG

Esteemed Lady Dies

After a severe illness from cancer, Mrs. Druscilla Richey, wife of Mr. W.S. Richey, an I.C. shop employee, died last night at 11:45 o'clock at the family residence, 1626 Monroe Street [Paducah]. Her demise had been expected for some days and came as no surprise. Mrs. Richey was a native of Elizabethtown, Illinois, where she was born June 25, 1859. There she was united in marriage to Mr. Richey and they removed here in 1866 [sic], where they have since resided. She was a most excellent lady and one highly esteemed by all friends. She was a member of the Broadway M.E. Church. In addition to her husband, two little
daughters and two sons, along with her aged father, two sisters and other relatives mourn her death.

The funeral will occur this afternoon at 4 o'clock. Services will be from the family residence and Rev. Dr. Sullivan, of the Broadway M.E. Church, will officiate. The burial will be in Oak Grove, where sleep several children who proceeded her to the grave. Friends are invited.

The date of their removal to Paducah is obviously in error. Hardin County, Illinois Marriage Register 1, page 6 shows that W.S. Richey and Drucilla Reak married 21 September 1884. Both were 27 years old. - Brenda Joyce Jerome, CG

I neglected to mention one important item. According to the online database of burials in Oak Grove Cemetery, Paducah, Drucilla Richey has no tombstone and her death happened before Kentucky began to keep official death records. Therefore, this obituary is even more important.
